Matamata is famous both nationally and internationally as the home of nearby Hobbiton, the best known movie set of Peter Jackson’s directed Lord of the Rings trilogy. The set, a tourist Mecca for JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) fans is once again in use in 2011 for the filming of the Hobbit.
